SAUZE D'OULX

Sauze d’Oulx is found in the High-Susa Valley, at about 1510m, surrounded by the high peaks of Triplex, Bourget and Genevris mountains. It is often referred to as “the balcony of the Alps” and it is the perfect location to practice winter sports. Sauze d’Oulx is a renowned and comfortable holiday destination.
During summer time Sauze d’Oulx caters for many interests such as trekking, horse riding, fishing, tennis, MTB and freeride. Sauze d’Oulx offers plenty of opportunities to taste the typical local products, such as the excellent mountain cheeses, the tasty game and the numerous wild products.

A bit of history
The history of Sauze d’Oulx is strongly related to that of Oulx and the whole of the Susa Valley. These areas have seen the passage of Julius Caesar’s Roman Troops and in the following centuries the incursions and raids of Goth, the Longobards and Burgundi.
In 1927 Sauze d’Oulx (whose town hall had been absorbed by Oulx in 1921) under the Fascist regime saw its name changed and ‘italianized’ into Salice d’Ulzio. After the Second World War the town re-acquired its original name and township.
Around the 1930’s, the life of Sauze d’Oulx was carried out in an archaical way and the forest-agro-pastural activity was the most widespread.

But soon, Sauze d’Oulx equipped itself for the growing tertiary sector of tourism, which turn into its main source of wealth: during the winter season it became possible to make use of ski instructors, who were mostly pupils of the Sauze’s first born Great Olympic champion Luigi Faure, a pioneer in this discipline, five times Italian champion and master of elegance and boldness in skiing.

It must be remembered that the whole of the High-Susa Valley and in particular Sauze d’Oulx, had been the cradle of skiing in Italy. From Placido Eydallin who is considered the promoter of skiing in Sauze d’Oulx to Piero Gros, winner of ten Italian titles, the 1974 World cup as well as winner of Olympic Gold in Innsbruck 1976 and let us not forget skier Giuliano Besson, also from Sauze.
It was only after the second world war that the local economy was able to make the most of the winter touristic activities, without forgetting to nourish summer amenities. So Sauze grew and turned into one of the most equipped and popular touristic destinations of the entire alpine area.

Today, Sauze d’Oulx, is characterized by a range of services of absolute excellence: hotel and infrastructures of all categories, refurbished rural chalets and picturesque bars and restaurants, as well as entertainment for skiers and non skiers alike.

NOT ONLY SKIING

Winter in Sauze d’Oulx is full of surprises. Skiers can have a break in one of the many characteristic refuges scattered on the slopes, either for a meal, a snack or a quick coffee.
For those who prefer a more relaxing holiday, you are spoilt for choice: shopping in the boutiques, hiking either on foot or with snow-shoes, indoor or heated outdoor swimming pools, fitness centers and many Spa facilities.
For the more adventurous, a dog-sled ride or a test-drive in the secure iced car circuit might appeal to you.
In the evening, the magic of a ski-doo ride in the mountains where you can enjoy a typical evening dinner in the tranquil atmosphere of 2.500m is a must do activity.

A SUMMER TO DREAM ABOUT

The mountains transform during summer but their charm remains unchanged.
Sauze d’Oulx and the Via Lattea are a paradise for sports lovers. The main lifts stay open to guarantee hikers and mountain-bikers splendid routes of all levels.
More out-door swimming pools and tennis courts open, and so do the many adventure parks, the fascinating climbing routes, vie ferrate, the famous tibetan-bridge (the longest in the world), numerous rafting and canyoning sites.
For golf lovers don’t forget the ‘classic’ course of Sestriere, the highest in Europe, and others in Clavière-Montgenèvre and Pragelato. And if you like to try summer-skiing, the glaciers of Les Deux Alpes and Tignes are less than 2 hours away by car journey.

LA VIA LATTEA (THE MILKY WAY)

The Via Lattea is the largest skiing district of the western Alps. Its lifts spread over six Italian towns and one French town. Seven skiing areas are interconnected creating a ‘roundabout’ of sorts; Sauze d’Oulx, Sestriere, Pragelato, Sansicario, Cesana Monti della Luna, Clavière and Montgenèvre.
This district hosted the Torino 2006 Winter Olympic Games receiving world-wide consensus on its outstanding natural beauty, variety and technical characteristics of its slopes.
In the summer the Via Lattea is transformed into a real paradise for hikers, mountain-bikers and all those who have the desire for a relaxing experience surrounded by unspoiled nature and culture. Taking only 1 hour either by car or train (with hourly departures) it is possible to visit Turin, world capital of art and culture.

TURIN

This became the first Italian capital city, Turin offers an unforgettable glimpse through the centre paths and long arcade style boulevards. There is a perfect balance of the ostentatious Piedmont-Baroque style and the more rational Roman urbanistic. Turin can easily charm its visitors thanks to its royal sites, such as Piazza Castello in the heart of the city. Again revealing itself as the queen of flavour through its historical café lounges and restaurants. It becomes impossible to resist the lively city rituals such as ‘aperitivo’ and thick-and creamy hot chocolates. An inheritance of the Savoy opulence whose maximum expression is the Residenze Reali was declared a World heritage site by Unesco in 1997.
